Pinwheel is an API platform. They are designed specifically for payroll applications. This is a big deal because it has the opportunity to change many industries. On their website, they talk about loans, employment verification, and direct deposit specifically. I imagine this could expand to other areas as well. If people were able to verify income easier, I imagine more people would.
They are in the fintech industry like a few other companies I have featured (Pipe, Vise, and Finix). This is exciting because this industry is growing very fast. Below is a highlight of some of the acquisitions that happened in February 2020 alone:
Also, if you look at the investment market Fintech is becoming a more and more popular place for VCs to invest.
Pinwheel is a very new company. The financials are not available but I believe they have an opportunity to be very big!
I am a big fan of the leadership team at Pinwheel. They have a lot of experience together and have been successful.
Curtis Lee, the Executive Chairman, was a product manager at Google, Zynga, the VP of Product at GroupOn, and founded a company called Luxe that he sold to Volvo in 2017.
Kurtis Lin, the CEO, worked with Curtis Lee at Luxe prior to starting the company with him. I love seeing experiences like this because they have built up trust with each other.
Anish Basu, the CTO, also has experience at Zynga and Google.
The one gap it seems this team has is in the financial space. I am not sure if any of them have worked on a financial product before. Also, I would have loved to see Curtis Lee be the CEO based on his background. He has a lot of other projects going on so that may be the reason he is not the CEO.
Here is the surprise...
Pinwheel is not hiring right now according to their website.
That said, I do not believe them for three reasons.
1. This is not the kind of company that can build with a tiny team
2. They just raised $7M, they have to do something with that money. I imagine a portion will go to building a team.
3. It's not on the website but if you look at their LinkedIn pages it says otherwise.
So, I would reach out. Start building a relationship with the team and see what they need.
